Direct answer
1:1 aspect ratio
A square has no orientation to negotiate. 1080 × 1080, 1200 × 1200, and 2000 × 2000 are the same ratio at different resolutions. This page is that ratio. Portrait feed work is 4:5. Classic photos are often 4:3 or 3:2, which become a square only after a crop.
Quick reference
| 512 × 512 | Small square |
|---|---|
| 1080 × 1080 | Common social square |
| 1200 × 1200 | Larger social square |
| 2000 × 2000 | High-resolution square |

Working presets and safe-zone guidance are checked against official platform documentation. Safe zones remain conservative guides because app UI varies.
Equal sides
The simplified ratio of any equal pair is 1:1. The calculator opens at 1080 × 1080. Lock is already on, so typing 1200 in either field makes the other 1200. If you turn the lock off, the page becomes an ordinary calculator and a mismatched pair will stop being square. Turn the lock back on before you treat the result as 1:1.
Square files are used for profile images, some grid posts, product tiles, and anywhere a layout needs identical cells. They are a poor substitute for 16:9 video thumbnails and for 9:16 stories, because both of those shapes throw away a large part of a square or leave large margins.
Neighbors that are not squares
4:5 at the same 1080 width is 1080 × 1350. It looks similar in a feed and it is not square. 4:3 at 1600 × 1200 is a landscape. Cropping either one to 1:1 keeps the shorter side and cuts the longer side. On a 4:3 landscape the cut is horizontal. On a 4:5 portrait the cut is vertical. The image tool is the way to see which edge you lose.
Examples
1080 × 1080
A usual social square, and the pair loaded on this page.
2000 × 2000
Same ratio, almost four times the pixels of 1080 square. Use it when the destination will scale down.
A 4:5 file forced square
1080 × 1350 cropped to 1:1 loses 270 pixels of height. Decide whether that loss is the top, the bottom, or a bit of both.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1080 × 1350 a square?
No. 1080 × 1350 is 4:5. A square at 1080 wide is 1080 × 1080.
Do both fields have to match?
Yes, for a 1:1 result. The lock on this page keeps them matched while you edit.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Image decoding, reframing, and export happen locally in your browser. The site does not receive your image file.
Which image formats can I use?
You can open JPG, PNG, and WebP images, then export JPG, PNG, or WebP files in supported browsers.
