Direct answer

4:5 aspect ratio

Four units of width and five of height. The common social pair is 1080 × 1350, which is the portrait feed preset in this tool. This page calculates that proportion. It does not explain full-screen vertical video, and it does not explain the Reels safe zone.

Platform data sources

Working presets and safe-zone guidance are checked against official platform documentation. Safe zones remain conservative guides because app UI varies.

The feed shape

1080 × 1350 reduces to 4:5 exactly. Lock the ratio and another width scales the same way: 800 wide is 1000 tall, 1200 wide is 1500 tall, 1600 wide is 2000 tall. Instagram’s portrait feed is the usual reason to pick this shape. It takes more vertical room in a scrolling feed than a square, without becoming a full-screen story.

The image tool can show the crop on your file. This page is the ratio. If the assignment says 1080 × 1350, you are done once the fields match. If it says “vertical full screen”, you want 9:16 instead.

Not 9:16, and not 1:1

9:16 is 0.5625:1. A 1080-wide 9:16 frame is 1920 tall, 570 pixels taller than 1080 × 1350. Subjects that fit a feed portrait can lose their headroom or their feet in a reel crop. 1:1 at 1080 wide is 1080 tall, 270 pixels shorter than 4:5. Square grids and portrait feeds are neighbors, not substitutes.

Reels safe zone is a different task again. It assumes a 9:16 canvas and draws an overlay for interface chrome. A 4:5 feed image does not use that overlay. Link across when you are making both files from one photo. Do not treat this page as the Reels guide.

Examples

1080 × 1350

The pair this page opens with, and the Instagram Feed preset used by the crop tool.

From a square

A 1080 × 1080 image fit into 4:5 gains vertical canvas or, if you fill the frame, must be extended. Fill crop cannot invent pixels above a square.

From 9:16

A 1080 × 1920 frame cropped to 4:5 keeps the width and trims height. Set the focus point on the image tool if the trim has to protect a face.
