Vertical proportion
9:16 aspect ratio
9:16 means width is 9 units and height is 16. It is the full-screen vertical proportion, at whatever pixel size you choose.

Direct answer
9:16 aspect ratio
9:16 equals 0.5625:1. Height is width × 16 ÷ 9. Width is height × 9 ÷ 16. This page is that proportion: how to calculate it, which frame sizes share it, and how it relates to 16:9. It is not a page about the single resolution 1080 × 1920.
Quick reference
| 720 × 1280 | HD vertical |
|---|---|
| 1080 × 1920 | Full HD vertical, one example |
| 1440 × 2560 | QHD vertical |
| 2160 × 3840 | 4K vertical |

Working presets and safe-zone guidance are checked against official platform documentation. Safe zones remain conservative guides because app UI varies.
Calculate either side
Lock 9:16. A width of 720 gives a height of 1280. A width of 1080 gives 1920. A width of 1440 gives 2560. A width of 2160 gives 3840. Those are four resolutions with one ratio. If your width is 900, the locked height is 1600. The proportion does not become something else just because the pixel count is unfamiliar.
The fields on this page open at 1080 × 1920 because that pair is a clear, exact 9:16 example. Changing the width while the lock is on is how you leave that example and calculate a different 9:16 frame.
How 9:16 relates to 16:9
16:9 and 9:16 are the same units with the axes swapped. A 1920 × 1080 landscape frame, rotated, has the pixel counts of a 1080 × 1920 portrait frame. Rotation is not a crop. If the source is a finished landscape picture, filling a 9:16 frame discards the left and right. Fitting it keeps the whole picture and leaves bars. The image tool is where that choice is visible.
4:5 is also portrait, and it is not 9:16. 4:5 is 0.8:1, shorter than a full-screen vertical frame. A feed crop and a full-screen story are different compositions. Use the 4:5 page when the shape is the feed. Stay here when the shape is full-screen vertical.
How this differs from the 1080 × 1920 page
1080 × 1920 is one 9:16 resolution: a vertical Full HD grid with 2,073,600 pixels. People ask for it when an export preset, a template, or a platform field demands those exact pixels. People ask for 9:16 when they need the proportion at 720 × 1280, at 4K vertical, or at a custom width. If the question is the pixel grid, go to the 1080 × 1920 page. If the question is the shape, stay here.
TikTok, Reels, and Shorts are common places a 9:16 frame is used. Their overlay guides are not part of the ratio. The same 9:16 image can be covered differently in each app. Those guides are separate pages, linked below, and they assume a 1080 × 1920 working canvas.
Examples
720 wide
Locked 9:16 height is 1280. Same ratio as the larger frames, HD vertical pixel count.
1080 wide
Locked height is 1920. Treat that pair as an example on this page, and open the resolution page when those pixels are the assignment.
From 16:9
Swap 1920 × 1080 to 1080 × 1920 and the ratio flips from 16:9 to 9:16. A landscape photo still needs a crop or a fit.
Frequently asked questions
Is 9:16 the same thing as 1080 × 1920?
No. 1080 × 1920 is one resolution with a 9:16 ratio. 720 × 1280 and 2160 × 3840 are also 9:16.
How do I get the missing side?
Lock 9:16 and edit one field. Height = width × 16 ÷ 9. Width = height × 9 ÷ 16, rounded to the nearest pixel.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Image decoding, reframing, and export happen locally in your browser. The site does not receive your image file.
Which image formats can I use?
You can open JPG, PNG, and WebP images, then export JPG, PNG, or WebP files in supported browsers.
